What is emergency lighting?

Lighting that automatically comes on when the power supply to the normal lighting provision fails.

Emergency escape lighting is the part of an emergency lighting system that provides illumination for the safety of people leaving a location or attempting to terminate a potentially dangerous process beforehand. It is part of the fire safety provision of a building and a requirement of The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

A minimum duration of 3 hours should be used for emergency escape lighting if the premises are not evacuated immediately. For example, in the case of sleeping accommodation. If the premises will be reoccupied immediately the supply is restored without waiting for the batteries to be recharged.

Routine testing should be carried out to ensure the lights and battery are correctly operating:

Monthly – short functional test carried out to ensure the light operates correctly. This test will minimise damage to the components (e.g. lamps / battery).
Annually – The annual test should be a full rated duration test to ensure that the emergency lights are still working. Also that the lights are producing the acceptable level of light at the end of the test. For example if a luminaire is rated for a 3 hour duration then the light should still be lit after 3 hours.

It is worth noting that the full duration test will be completed at a time of low risk of an emergency situation. This is so that the batteries have sufficient time to recharge.

Results will be recorded in an Emergency lighting log book. Any defects to the lights will be rectified as soon as possible.
